GreenUP

From Research to Design Solutions

FOCUS

www.GreenUP.design is the holistic consulting unit led by Prof. Giacomo Pirazzoli to drive the GreenUP research background into case-by-case design solutions. As a scientific research outcome, it has nothing to do with greenwashing fashionable marketing.

As a Nature-Based Solution (NBS) for retrofitting, new constructions, and urban renewal issues, GreenUP aligns with 9 UN-SDG (United Nations Sustainable Development Goals) of Agenda 2030, including: 1. No poverty; 2. Zero hunger; 3. Good health and well-being; 5. Gender equality; 6. Clean water and sanitation; 11. Sustainable cities and economies; 12. Responsible consumption and production; 13. Climate action; 15. Life on land.

As an architectural tool, when integrated into a case-by-case design strategy for façade systems, flat roofs, etc., GreenUP provides a surface for growing crops as brise-soleil, transforms existing balconies into private micro-gardens, and turns flat roofs into community edible gardens, among other possibilities.

As an urban tool, GreenUP connects existing buildings, creating new public/private, traffic-safe, and beautifully planted pathways for people to walk on. It may eventually link urban interstitial/derelict sites to enter semi-public scales.

As a site-specific landscape tool, GreenUP may work with local plants that are either edible, medicinal, aromatic, or ornamental.

As an environmental tool, besides preventing the Heat-Island Effect, GreenUP serves as the ground for rain gardens and energy devices such as wind captors, solar and photovoltaic panels, etc. It also provides a platform for bio-processing system, recycling exhausted water to irrigate vertical edibles.

As an innovative and sustainable circular economy tool, GreenUP may also incorporate low-tech, affordable, and self-build strategies, along with a high-tech digital approach such as 3D and AI-Artificial Intelligence modeling, up to satellite and sensor monitoring.

Through entirely ecological farming on an individual, family, or community basis, GreenUP aims to transform the current, and unfortunately, all-concrete urban landscape into a truly all-green environment.
